CHRISTCHURCH: Canterbury Nepalese Society Incorporated (CNS) has donated the entire net surplus raised from Teej Mela 2026 to the Nepal Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support people affected by the devastating floods in Nepal. The society said NZ$8,384.87 in net proceeds from the Teej Mela, held in Christchurch on September 5, was deposited into the Nepal Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. The amount is equivalent to NPR 745,131.28.
According to a statement issued by the Canterbury Nepalese Society on Monday, the Teej Mela raised a total of NZ$25,694, while NZ$17,309.13 was spent on organising and operating the event. The remaining amount after expenses was transferred to Nepal.
CNS President Jiban Aryal said the contribution represented more than financial assistance, describing it as an expression of the unity, compassion and solidarity of the Nepali community in Canterbury.
Aryal said the Teej Mela, organised to celebrate Nepali culture and traditions, was also connected with efforts to support families affected by the devastating floods in Nepal. He said the collective contributions of attendees, artists, volunteers, sponsors, supporters and community members had made it possible to raise funds for disaster relief.
Former CNS President Dipak Pandey thanked everyone who contributed directly or indirectly to the success of the Teej Mela, saying their support had helped transform a cultural celebration into practical assistance for families affected by the disaster in Nepal.
Speaking to Himalpari, Pandey said the society remained committed to transparency, accountability and responsible financial management in fundraising for humanitarian assistance.
“Accordingly, the relief funds have been transferred through an official channel to ensure that the assistance reaches the affected communities,” he said.
