Morang: Farmers in Letang Municipality-1 have received orange and coffee saplings along with irrigation equipment under a government-backed programme aimed at expanding commercial fruit farming and boosting rural incomes.
Supported by the Koshi Provincial Government and Letang Municipality, the initiative distributed 1,000 orange saplings, 2,200 coffee saplings, 17 water tanks with a combined capacity of 49,000 litres, and over 13,000 metres of irrigation pipes to local farmers.
Ward Chairperson Bishnu Kumar Magar said 266 farmers are now engaged in orange and coffee cultivation, with plantation areas increasing by 10 to 15 ropanis annually. He added that the programme is creating local employment opportunities and helping reduce migration from the area.
The Koshi Provincial Government provided Rs. 1.25 million for the project, while the ward contributed an additional Rs. 100,000 to improve irrigation and expand commercial farming.
Mayor Bhupendra Kumar Lawati said Letang’s hilly areas are well suited for orange and coffee production, and the municipality plans to further increase cultivation to meet growing market demand.
